The village owes its name to a famous and powerful family, the barony of La Tour, which allied itself in the 14th century to the house of Auvergne. Among the last great figures of this lineage, Catherine de Medicis and her daughter Queen Margot, in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century. This dynasty had acquired a considerable number of possessions and seigneuries, as far as Bouillon and Sedan, but Louis XIII and then Louis XIV dismantled this complex, including the fortified castle erected in the 11th century at La Tour-d’Auvergne and destroyed in There remains no vestige. But the locality has preserved other inheritances of its past, and this agricultural commune raising of approximately inhabitants there were 2 at the beginning of the twentieth century has become a stage appreciated by the amateurs of green tourism thanks To its preserved natural environment. It has also become a winter sports resort appreciated for its conviviality and its family atmosphere, bordering other famous municipalities, such as Mont-Dore and La Bourboule. If there are no traces left of the castle once on a spur, the village built in tiers is not lacking picturesque charm, as evidenced by the rue de la Pavade, formerly covered with slabs to evacuate rainwater.

Unusually , this outstanding geological site owes its aesthetic quality and clarity of geological landforms to human activities : agriculture, forestry and grazing. Over the last 6, years the landscape has undergone many changes and has become progressively more structured. There has been an alternation between periods where forest dominated, for example during the Hundred Years War, and others when almost the entire region was under cultivation, for example during ancient times or between the 17th and 19th centuries.
When there are too many trees the volcanic landforms are hard to see , and the volcanoes appear to be nothing more than wooded hills. There is a marked difference between the lava flows and the surrounding plateau in terms of vegetation: trees grow on the less fertile lavas, while the plateau is covered in grass, which allows the lavas to be easily picked out in the landscape. However this delicate balance is threatened by the increasing trend away from agricultural land use. Aerial view of the Mazayes lava flow, clearly visible in relation to its surroundings M.
It is vital that man continues to cultivate this land , and in particular maintains the grazing which is a major factor in keeping the landscape free of trees. This has been incorporated into the management plan contained in the UNESCO application, in order to preserve the balance between farming and forestry which characterises the site. However, superficially in terms of woodland and agricultural plots it has changed in a number of ways over the last 6, years. Period 2 : Renaissance period Following a difficult period during the 14th and 15th centuries, the inhabitants left the plateau , thereby massively reducing the amount of cultivated and inhabited land.
This led to reforestation of the puys and lavas.
Seasonal variations in phytoplankton biomass and production were studied in and in the newly flooded Sep Reservoir France in relation to various physico-chemical environmental factors. No trophic upsurge occurred in the reservoir as has been found in most of the newly flooded reservoirs. Phytoplankton composition changed drastically from to , the latter year being characterized by a rarity of diatoms. Areal euphotic chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton carbon biomass were typical of mesotrophic lakes in and of somewhat oligotrophic environments in In contrast, the primary production PP rates were similar in both years, indicating a change in the factors controlling phytoplankton populations from to The low PP compared with the algal biomass present in seemed to be related to the instability of the water column and the Z mix :Z eu ratio, whose negative effects on the phytoplankton community were apparently more pronounced in than in

Secondary organic aerosols SOA produced in the atmosphere from sequential oxidation of biogenic or anthropogenic volatile organic compounds VOC represent a significant part of the atmospheric organic aerosol. Aerosol particles can act as cloud condensation nuclei or can be scavenged by cloud droplets, where organic carbon undergo chemical and biological transformations.
Due to its high complexity, a nontargeted analysis by FT-ICR MS Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry has been used to characterize the dissolved organic matter at a molecular level. Interestingly, a significant number of assigned molecular formulas are attributed to brown carbon and nitroaromatics. Seasonal variabilities are also observed for organonitrates and organosulfates.

Early human societies and their interactions with the natural world have been extensively explored in palaeoenvironmental studies across Central and Western Europe. Yet, despite an extensive body of scholarship, there is little consideration of the environmental impacts of proto-historic urbanisation. Typically palaeoenvironmental studies of Bronze and Iron Age societies discuss human impact in terms of woodland clearance, landscape openness and evidence for agriculture.
Although these features are clearly key indicators of human settlement, and characterise Neolithic and early to Middle Bronze Age impacts at Corent, they do not appear to represent defining features of a protohistoric urban environment. The Late Iron Age Gallic Oppidum of Corent is remarkable for the paucity of evidence for agriculture and strong representation of apophytes associated with disturbance. Increased floristic diversity — a phenomenon also observed in more recent urban environments — was also noted.
